Sanford and Moore: A Charlotte Legacy

UNC Charlotte’s first two residence halls, Sanford and Moore, represent a significant era of campus history.

The twin 11-story buildings, named for former North Carolina governors Terry Sanford and Dan Moore, opened in 1969. “The Towers” accommodated over 1,000 students combined and established the beginning of residential life on campus. Moore Hall served as the first men’s residence hall, while Sanford originally housed women. These high-rise halls anchored what is today’s South Village.

If you lived in these halls as a resident or resident advisor, you are part of UNC Charlotte’s history.

Now you can leave a permanent footprint where you used to call “home” — a commemorative, engraved brick that will adorn the future courtyard where these pillars of history once stood for over half a century.

Moore Hall came down in 2023 to make way for Wilson Hall, a six-story residence hall dedicated to first-year students, named after Charlotte alumnus Dontá L. Wilson ’97. Sanford’s demolition began in spring 2025 and was completed early this fall. When the full project renovation is complete, residents will enjoy landscaping, bricked walking paths and more outdoor activity space for gathering and community.

Make your gift today and be part of a lasting legacy.
