Coach Marinell “Newy” Wilhite joined the UNC Charlotte Softball team in 1978. Under her leadership, the 49ers had great records, improving their record from 5-13 to 29-10 in Newy's last season as coach. As the second coach for the 49ers Softball team, Coach Newy led the team to their first winning season in 1979 with a record of 23-7. In 1980, the Niners earned the top seed in the NCAIAW state tournament and records their 50th win. Coach Newy left UNC Charlotte after the 1981 season but the foundation she built continues to provide the team today with the fundamentals of success.
In recognition of the success and leadership of Newy, the Softball team and alumnae are raising money for a softball scholarship in Coach Newy's name. Our goal is to raise $25,000.
