Leadership Academy Student Capstone Projects

The Leadership Academy is a two-year, extra-curricular program modeled after leadership training programs for young professionals in industry.  It prepares undergraduate students to successfully fulfill leadership roles on campus and within the engineering industry by building their leadership abilities.

Capstone Project Proposal for Niner University Elementary at Amay James

Niner University Elementary is a part of the UNC system laboratory schools, a program that aims to provide improved educational outcomes for students with high needs. The Engineering Leadership Librarians (ELL) is a group of ambitious engineering student leaders who will further this goal by building a Free Little Library, providing reading materials and inspiring young readers as they contribute to the mission of creating an environment that encourages joy in the pursuit of learning.

Capstone Project Proposal for Alpha Learning Center

Alpha Learning Center is an afterschool program that provides a safe academic environment for elementary students, specifically children of color, to interact with other students and receive homework help. Recognizing the positive ways Alpha Learning Center reaches their community, the Engineering Leadership Librarians (ELL), a group of aspiring engineering student leaders wishes to invest in the Center by building a Free Little Library, providing reading materials and inspiring young readers to further improve their academic performance.

Capstone Project Proposal for The Hollingsworth Foundation

The Hollingsworth Foundation is a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring awareness to an autosomal disease which leads to the deterioration of the cerebellum, leading to impairment of motor functions and progressive vision loss. The founder of the Hollingsworth Foundation, Derrian Hollingsworth, has a personal connection to this condition as he, his sister, mother, and two daughters have all been diagnosed. The objective of this project is to work with the Hollingsworth Foundation to provide meaningful experiences for Mr. Hollingsworth’s youngest daughter, Kelsey, related to engineering, campus organizations, and UNC Charlotte.

The Hollingsworth Capstone team will also be supporting the Hollingsworth Foundation through increased awareness and fundraising campaigns directly to the Foundation created with professional content creators.

Capstone Project Proposal for Paving the Way for the Panthers

Paw Creek Elementary has an existing nature trail that was created prior to 2007.  However, the trail has been neglected over the years. The Trail Blazers are partnering with Paw Creek Elementary School to create an educational and interactive nature trail on school grounds. The purpose of this project is to revitalize the existing trail by clearing the path, restoring trail infrastructure, and adding permanent educational activity stations along the route.

Capstone Project Proposal for Teaching Tables

At Hough High School there is a relatively small outside area reserved for seating during lunch. The problem at HHS can be solved using engineering principles and our solution will stand as a physical reminder of the engineering concepts and ideas learned. In addition to the tables, the team will present an educational presentation showcasing the engineering profession.  The new seating is intended to both improve the campus grounds and inspire the high school to pursue the field.
