9/11 20th Anniversary Memorial Stair Climb

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic attacks against the United States that took place on the morning of September 11, 2001.

A community of Niner Nation first-responders and UNC Charlotte's own ROTC battalion will be participating in a stair climb to honor the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 8 emergency medical personnel killed in the collapse of the Twin towers. It is also a chance to acknowledge the impact the events of 9/11 continue to have on our nation's military. 

Participants will climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center on UNC Charlotte's campus.

Through event participation, donations and other commemorative events, we ensure that each of the firefighters, police officers, and EMS workers who lost their lives are honored and that the world knows that we will never forget.

Support one or more of the following funds to make an local impact for current and future first responders.

• Joshua B. Earley Scholarship: established in memory of Joshua B. Earley. Joshua was a firefighter for Station 27 of the Charlotte Fire Department, and he worked part time for the Harrisburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, Inc. Joshua tragically lost his life in the line of duty. This scholarship will recognize and support students pursuing study within the William States Lee College of Engineering.
  
  
• Firefighter Steven Coakley Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship was established in memory of Steven Coakley who heroically laid down his life on September 11, 2001 to help others escape The World Trade Center, so we will "never forget". Scholarship Criteria: Eligible Major(s): Fire Safety Engineering Technology; Freshman; Preference given to those servicing in the firefighter community.
  
  
• Newell Volunteer Fire Dept Scholarship: This scholarship was established as a reminder of the Newell VFD legacy and in recognition of all the men and women who served the citizens in and around Newell, North Carolina from 1949 until June 30, 2011. Furthermore, this scholarship honors over 60 years of dedicated volunteer service to the Newell community including the long relationship between Newell VFD and UNC Charlotte. Funding will be used to provide financial assistance to students pursuing study in Fire Safety Engineering Technology within the William States Lee College of Engineering.
  
  
• Joseph J. Fenty Memorial Quiet Professional Scholarship for Army ROTC: Lieutenant Colonel Joseph J. Fenty, Jr. was among 10 soldiers killed when their Chinook helicopter crashed in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, on 5 May 2006, while conducting combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph J. Fenty was born a soldier. And during his 20-year military career, his quiet passion inspired others to live the way he did. This needs-based scholarship has been established by Lieutenant Colonel Fenty’s friends and family to honor his memory.
